Activity #1: Using Search@UW
For this activity, you’re going to use Search@UW to find a source related to your essay topic. Follow the prompts below to complete the activity:
1--Use either your topic or the usefulness of standardized testing in college admissions to search in Search@UW for a source. Hint: Remember that after you run your initial search, you can use the filters on the left side of your screen to refine your results.
2--Once you find a source, locate the permalink for the source, then submit both your initials and the permalink into the Slide-o box on the library-guide page for this class. For example, my submission would look like this: BWS--https://wisconsin-uwgb.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01UWI_GB/10cngoh/cdi_jstor_primary_10_2307_45178180
3--Be ready to give a quick explanation of the keywords and the search filters that you used to find your source!
Activity #2: Lateral Reading
With your group, look at the two sources and complete the following prompts for each source:
1--Looking at the assigned source, list the publisher (name of website, newspaper, or journal)
2--Do a web search (Google or other search engine) for the publisher. List one or more facts you found from your search that will help you judge the credibility of this site/publisher
3--Looking at the assigned source, list the author(s)
4--Do a web search (Google or other search engine) for the author. List one or more facts that you found from your search that will help you judge the credibility of this author:
5--Would this article be a good, credible source to use for an assignment? Explain why you think so, including details from your lateral reading investigation above.
